Movement of Persons in Times of Disasters – A Virtual Training of Trainers

Eastern Caribbean, 8-29 June 2021 – More than thirty immigration and border officials from the Caribbean region took part in a regional virtual training on cross-border displacement in the context of disasters organized by Organization of Eastern Caribbean States Commission (OECS) and the Caribbean Community Implementing Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS).

The training comprised four interactive sessions from 8-29 June and was delivered in partnership with the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The event aimed to reinforce participants’ pre-existing skillsets and knowledge on cross-border displacement in the Caribbean region and cover areas such as psychosocial support, mixed migration flows and international protection in disaster scenarios, among other topics.

Participants conducted a series of exercises, pop quizzes and other activities to reflect challenges, gaps and best practices when addressing cross-border displacement from a practical point of view, also, to signal different and relevant sources of data on disaster displacement to inform policy and decision-making. Participants included immigration officers from Saint Lucia, Antigua, Martinique, Barbados, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
