New Futures and Possibilities: Art and Disaster Displacement during Migration Week

The Platform on Disaster Displacement is collaborating with DISPLACEMENT: Uncertain Journeys to present an exhibition of contemporary art pieces from around the world to highlight disaster displacement during Migration Week in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The DISPLACEMENT exhibition taking place during the 11th Global Forum on Migration and Development Summit seeks to create memorable and informative experiences that will prompt further curiosity and foster continued engagement about disaster displacement once Migration Week participants return to their home countries. DISPLACEMENT artists will also be part of a cultural event hosted by France and PDD at the French Residency on 8 December.

Differing in approach and scale, some of the artwork raises greater awareness about disaster displacement and the impacts of climate change through strong imagery and humor, such as Søren Dahlgaard’s The Inflatable Island. Other pieces draw on utopian visions or present-day realities in affected communities to prompt reflection about effective solutions and how to live with future disaster displacement risk, like Lucy + Jorge Orta’s Antarctic World Passport.

DISPLACEMENT is a multi-year collaborative art project that cultivates artistic responses to disaster displacement. It supports the state-led Platform on Disaster Displacement through exhibitions that provide policymakers an opportunity to reflect upon and understand disaster displacement from a visual, experiential and emotional perspective. DISPLACEMENT hopes to create engaging spaces that inspire ideas that might not otherwise emerge around a conference table, and which keep the human story at the center of policy discussions.

The DISPLACEMENT exhibition for Migration Week was made possible by generous support from the Embassy of Denmark Rabat, the Federation of Germany Foreign Office, the Norwegian Refugee Council, La Fruitière, the University of the Arts London, Pro Helvetia Cairo, the UVA Humanitarian Collaborative, and private donors.
