The Network on Migration, Disasters and Climate Change Meets for the First Time in Chile

Santiago, Chile –  On 28 April 2022, the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD) attended the first meeting of the newly established South American Conference of Migration (SACM) ‘Network on Migration, Disasters and Climate Change’, which PDD helped create in 2021 during Argentina’s Chairmanship.

As current Chair of SACM, Chile invited PDD to continue to support and accompany this process, which aims to strengthen the exchange of good practices between SACM member countries regarding the collection of disaggregated data on cross-border displacement, and advance the identification of concrete solutions to disasters, environmental degradation and climate change and its link to internal migration patterns. This process will also contribute to shaping a regional position at the international level, including for the next UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) in Egypt.

In addition, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and PDD presented a new mapping report commissioned by SACM member countries between 2021 and 2022 titled ‘Mapeo sobre Migración, Medio Ambiente y Cambio Climático en América del Sur’ which features different natural hazards affecting countries in South America and best practices to address these issues. The mapping is available here and will be officially launched prior to the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF).

The first meeting of the network was hosted by the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was attended by delegations from Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Argentina, Venezuela and Uruguay.
