Human Mobility in a Changing Climate at the International Migration Review Forum 2022
Will you be attending the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) 2022 scheduled at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 17-20 May 2022? Are you interested in learning more about how human mobility in the context of disasters, climate change and environmental degradation is being addressed? Are you looking for inspiration on which key messages to include in your delegation’s interventions? Then, look no further – and do come back, since this article will be continuously updated as new information arrives!
In the right margin of this article, you can find the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD) Key Messages and Background Note on Human Mobility in a Changing Climate & The Global Compact For Migration. It includes background information and, importantly, key messages and commitments that States and other stakeholders can use to inform their interventions at the different IMRF roundtables, side events and policy debates.
Added to this page, you will also soon find a flyer for an event the PDD Secretariat is co-organizing with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), C40-MMC Global Mayors Task Force on Climate and Migration and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), titled “Facilitating safe and regular migration pathways in a changing climate: lessons from GCM implementation” from 08:30 to 09:30 am (New York time) on 18 May 2022, in Room 12 UN Building.
What to expect at the IMRF?
Over three years following the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in December 2018, the first IMRF will be hosted by the President of the UN General Assembly on 17-20 May 2022 to discuss and review progress in implementing the 23 Objectives of the GCM, as well as to guide future GCM implementation. The Forum will be composed of four interactive multi-stakeholder round tables, an informal interactive multi-stakeholder hearing, a policy dialogue and a plenary, as well as a number of side events. On the last day, on May 20, an intergovernmentally agreed Progress Declaration will be adopted, outlining progress and future commitments in advancing GCM implementation.
Below, you can find a non-exhaustive list of planned IMRF side events related to human mobility in the context of disasters, climate change and environmental degradation. The list will be regularly updated, as further information becomes available. If you have any events to add to this list or relevant information about the ones already there, please email info@disasterdisplacement.org.
