The Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in New York cordially invites all Permanent and Observer Missions to the UN, international organizations, regional organizations and non-governmental organizations to participate in a panel discussion on the work of the Platform on Disaster Displacement.

Displacement and migration in the context of disasters and climate change – The work of the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD)

Keynote remarks will be given by Ambassador Luke Daunivalu, Chargé d’Affaires of Fiji. The panel will further consist of Professor Walter Kaelin, Envoy of the Chair of the Platform on Disaster Displacement, and Mr. Tareq Md. Ariful Isla, Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN, representing the Vice-Chair of the Platform on Disaster Displacement. The discussion will be chaired by Ambassador Jürgen Schulz, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in New York.

Disaster displacement, both internal and across borders, is one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges of the 21^st century. Approximately 24.2 million people were displaced in the context of disasters in 2016, and this number is expected to rise the coming years due to the adverse effects of climate change. Governments have a responsibility to protect and assist those who are internally displaced in the context disasters. But displaced people who must cross borders often have limited protection when they arrive in other countries.

The Nansen Initiative was launched in 2012 to address this protection gap. It culminated in the adoption of the Nansen Initiative Protection Agenda by over 100 governments in October 2015.

The Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD) was launched in 2016 to follow up on the work started by the Nansen Initiative and to implement the recommendations of the Nansen Initiative Protection Agenda. Its approach to protecting disaster-displaced persons builds on effective practices and processes at the national and regional levels.
