Human Mobility at the Sendai Framework Midterm Review High-Level Meeting

The High-Level Meeting on the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework takes place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 18-19 May 2023.

The meeting will adopt a concise and action-oriented political declaration to renew commitment and accelerate the implementation of the Sendai Framework. It will inform the quadrennial review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July of 2023, the SDGs Summit, and the UN Secretary General’s Summit of the Future, at the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly in September 2023.

What to expect at the High-Level Meeting?

Eight years after the adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in March 2015, the President of the UN General Assembly will host this meeting on 18-19 May 2023 to discuss and review the recommendations of the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework. This event will mark the end of the Midterm Review and consist of two plenaries and four interactive multistakeholder panels. In parallel to the meeting, from 17-19 May 2023, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is organizing a Risk Reduction Hub to host a variety of discussions to examine the main findings of the Midterm Review, review good practices in DRR and advance the implementation of the Sendai Framework across sectors.

Which discussions and events are relevant to the topic of human mobility in the context of disasters and climate change?

Join us in New York or online, on 17 May from 10:30am – 12pm (EDT), for the hybrid side event exploring how States and other stakeholders can address “Human Mobility in the Context of Disasters”. Representatives of governments, international organizations and civil society will showcase effective practices on how to avert, minimize and address disaster displacement by enabling people at risk to stay in their communities, protecting and assisting people who are already on the move, and empowering those who may need to move in the face of disasters and climate change.

The event will be co-organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), the International Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), the Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR ) and the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD), with the sponsorship of Argentina, Australia, Fiji, EU, the Maldives, Morocco, Mozambique, Norway, Germany, the Philippines and Switzerland.

The discussion will be available via UN Webcast. You can register and read more about the event on the IOM Migration, Environment and Climate Change (MECC) portal.
